When I was in library school, a fellow student was displeased with the clunky LCSH "United States—History—Civil War, 1861-1865" and demanded, "Why isn't it just Civil War? There's only been one."
I thought he was joking.
He wasn't. https://t.co/ZqzhkS6rB2

My Bose QuietComfort over-ear headphones, which I use for ~4 years now: I still love them, but the ear cushions are now broken. No official repair / replace in Germany, as it seems. Cheap replacement cushions unreliable? What else can I do? Don't want to buy expensive new ones…

I 100% would pay a small fee for the audio version of academic journal articles, where the author reads the article and describes the charts. They could even editorialize. I assume this doesn’t exist because of big publishing companies, but if not I hope someone invents it soon.

after a warm welcome by Sabine Gehrlein, head librarian of @UBMannheim, Edgar Erdfelder and Ira Maschmann introduce the Open Science Office of the University of Mannheim, established in 2/2021: https://t.co/WXSVJxHDRC #OpenScience #support #funding #OSDMA21 pic.twitter.com/LAeh0ikoaC
— viola voß (@v_i_o_l_a) September 21, 2021
the first talk will be by @GordonFeld from @zi_mannheim: "So you want to take the plunge? Open science from perspective of a research group leader" – or rather: "Do you really want to take the plunge?" #OpenScience #OSDMA21 pic.twitter.com/Rt8ZlrtrmO
— viola voß (@v_i_o_l_a) September 21, 2021
according to @GordonFeld there are three #motivations to do #OpenScience: 1. you, 2. others, 3. your research. #OSDMA21 pic.twitter.com/1bdFV4UsfZ
— viola voß (@v_i_o_l_a) September 21, 2021
where to start doing #OpenScience? can't we do everything at once? – nope: choose only some aspects to begin with, and "be the tortoise, not the hare!", @GordonFeld resumes after giving us some insights in experiences of his own research group. https://t.co/ikgvWfF1yB #OSDMA21 pic.twitter.com/gZGWvjkY6p
— viola voß (@v_i_o_l_a) September 21, 2021
recommendations for doing #OpenScience by @GordonFeld: be aware of the fact that open science practices have risks and benefits, take it slow, don't "just" change the practices, discuss things openly with your team, and find partners! #lessonslearned #OSDMA21 pic.twitter.com/cQgEDoDkho
— viola voß (@v_i_o_l_a) September 21, 2021
one risk of #OpenScience might be: better, but less publications – which might be a problem when there are assessments based on the number of publications. #OSDMA21
— viola voß (@v_i_o_l_a) September 21, 2021
now Johanna Gereke (@JohannaGereke) talks about "Open science in teaching": why teach #openscience? how to incorporate open science in higher educdation teaching? her starting point: the reproducibility crisis – and the "credibility revolution". benefits are plenty! 🙂 #OSAMA21 pic.twitter.com/SOYZ64p155
— viola voß (@v_i_o_l_a) September 21, 2021
there are two ways of #teaching about #OpenScience – as a subject or as a process –, and it can be done "everywhere". #OSDMA21 pic.twitter.com/nQNImS1Ke5
— viola voß (@v_i_o_l_a) September 21, 2021
after giving some examples of #OpenScience courses at different universities Johanna gives this overview with five helpful principles for #teaching open science. #OSDMA21 pic.twitter.com/x5vajIYPyw
— viola voß (@v_i_o_l_a) September 21, 2021
Johanna's own course, called "Replication & Reproduction in the #SocialSciences", addresses advenced master students and PhD students. the "hands on" course includes e.g. a learning portfolio and a jointly written paper. #OpenScience #teaching #OSDMA21 pic.twitter.com/6hPXt3LjSN
— viola voß (@v_i_o_l_a) September 21, 2021
her #lessonslearned: #teaching #OpenScience is crucial to make science more transparent, sharing resources reduces barriers to spread open science knowledge, and institutional efforts and comprehensivce curriculum developments should take open science into consideration. #OSDMA21 pic.twitter.com/qoLh6BoYeN
— viola voß (@v_i_o_l_a) September 21, 2021
now Felix Henninger (@felixhenninger) talks about "Building Open Tools" to support the shift to reproducibility, to get more robust results – and making #OpenScience practices possible, easier, and in the end: required! #OSDMA21 pic.twitter.com/25nCqJaWVy
— viola voß (@v_i_o_l_a) September 21, 2021
important aspects: "tools aren't just code", the foundations of tools or software projects are important, and software comes at a cost! #OpenScience #OSDMA21 pic.twitter.com/mNrHU3ngBz
— viola voß (@v_i_o_l_a) September 21, 2021
"what can we do?" – a lot! 🙂 as a researcher: share your code, cite all tools you rely on, recognise and reward contributions, contribute back, get help. as a developer: demand recognition, start small, organize. #OSDMA21 pic.twitter.com/M7kvXo457Y
— viola voß (@v_i_o_l_a) September 21, 2021
so @felixhenninger sums up: "software tooling is a crucial part of the scientific process"! you get a substantial return on investment, but creation, support, and maintenance is a task of its own, and many issues are part of a larger shift to "team science". #OSDMA21 pic.twitter.com/U6mUZktP4u

#preregistrations are increasingly prevalent in #BusinessResearch while there are differences across fields. — viola voß (@v_i_o_l_a) September 21, 2021
the last two talk of #OSDMA21 will give an insight into #OpenScience in the #humanities. Hiram Kümper (@hkuemper) will speak about "Outreach as a Strategic Concept in Open Science? #CitizenScience and Transfer of Knowledge à la Mammelsdorf". Mammelsdorf? Julius! pic.twitter.com/zhNxJ0uTin
— viola voß (@v_i_o_l_a) September 21, 2021
what is #outreach? behind all the marketing aspects in the end it is all about connecting and staying connected, i.e. building and upholding relationships. #OpenScience #CitizenScience #OSDMA21 pic.twitter.com/M18sGJRPZd
— viola voß (@v_i_o_l_a) September 21, 2021
in the culture and creativity sector #outreach is about new audiences and collaborations, identifying interests, making culture available & accessible, and researching and producing cultural knowledge together. it's a mode of "embracing society" – but also: an iceberg. #OSDMA21 pic.twitter.com/t08EfbXPqB
— viola voß (@v_i_o_l_a) September 21, 2021
where does the university come in? @hkuemper says he has learnt a lot from the societal outreach activities of dutch universities (like Utrecht or Nijmegen), but also Mannheim university is active in this field. #OSDMA21
— viola voß (@v_i_o_l_a) September 21, 2021
.@hkuemper recommends 4 steps towards #outreach. 1. science communication: be short, be empathic, build connections, choose the right channel, be fun [with serious intentions :)]. #OSDMA21 pic.twitter.com/YgmZTkrVAu
— viola voß (@v_i_o_l_a) September 21, 2021
2. proceed with empowerment: talk a lot, be open to your partners, try to learn as much as possible about them, identify your strengths. #outreach #OpenScience #OSDMA21 pic.twitter.com/COXih4x2Pr
— viola voß (@v_i_o_l_a) September 21, 2021
3. enter into #collaboration: focus on deepening relations, stay focussed on your project, reflect why you are doing things, open your partners sites of display. #outreach #OpenScience #OSDMA21 pic.twitter.com/c7hypOljlH
— viola voß (@v_i_o_l_a) September 21, 2021
4. embrace the outskirts. and then: back to square on. 🙂 #outreach #OpenScience #OSDMA21 pic.twitter.com/UtGyTLXjNi
— viola voß (@v_i_o_l_a) September 21, 2021
but of course there is also the truth that "it isn't all just fun" … 🙂 more #lessonslearned: #transfer takes a lot of time, transfer needs stability and lasting relationships, and hence transfer needs structures. #outreach #OpenScience #CitizenScience #OSDMA21 pic.twitter.com/AB2RkGuH3J
— viola voß (@v_i_o_l_a) September 21, 2021
last but not least Daniela Kuschel will now talk about "#OpenAccess in Romance Literary Studies". her interest in this topic started by being a "user of open access formats" herself, and wanting to share her resources and results – which can be difficult. #RomanceStudies #OSDMA21 pic.twitter.com/3jbtyx43OY
— viola voß (@v_i_o_l_a) September 21, 2021
reasons for this can be found in dicipline-specific traditions: nostalgia for printed texts, authority of monographs, "traditional" publishers, expensive #openaccess options, legal difficulties. btw: @FIDRomanistik can help with some of these topics! 🙂 #RomanceStudies #OSDMA21 pic.twitter.com/BnGlfQgvt5
— viola voß (@v_i_o_l_a) September 21, 2021
as @christof77 said in an interview, the publication system should get back into the hands of science. so in 2017 a taskforce named "AG Digitale Romanistik" started to investigate – and act. 🙂 #OpenAccess #RomanceStudies #OSDMA21 pic.twitter.com/QhygEDmhXm
— viola voß (@v_i_o_l_a) September 21, 2021
one day Daniela was looking for funding for an #openaccess publication – and after talking to @zuphilip she found herself being the editor of an upcoming OA journal! 🙂 she learned a lot on the way but now also knows how much is still left to do for #RomanceStudies. #OSDMA21 pic.twitter.com/dNkAdI99JF
— viola voß (@v_i_o_l_a) September 21, 2021
an important point that has been very well illustrated by the talks during this afternoon: #OpenScience does not mean the same for all disciplines! there are different questions, different needs, different routes. ☝️ #OSDMA21
